10 Key Factors to Consider When Selecting the Perfect Childcare Facility

As businesses and government organizations across the country increasingly return to in-office work, many families are feeling the pressure to find the right childcare options that suit their unique needs. This transition can bring about a whirlwind of questions and uncertainties. How do you find a childcare center that feels right for your family? What should you pay attention to when visiting different facilities? We completely understand that choosing a childcare center is a major decision, and it can feel overwhelming.

As early childhood educators who care about the wellbeing of your child, we’ve explored how parents can make the best choice for their family. To support you in this important journey, we’ve curated a checklist* to help guide you through your childcare search with confidence and peace of mind.

  1. Relationships. Friendly, caring teachers help build a warm and welcoming environment that’s felt immediately. Teachers partner with parents to help build relationships, overcome challenges, and celebrate milestones.
  1. Leadership and Management. Make sure the Center Director has the right specialized early learning qualifications; program is licensed and/or regulated by state agencies; and that appropriate teacher-student ratios are maintained.
  1. Curriculum. The right curriculum helps children achieve developmental milestones through engaging, age-appropriate activities that promote learning. It’s important to see how a center’s educational philosophy and curriculum are being applied in the classroom.
  1. Teaching. Teachers plan activities to spark curiosity, lessons are differentiated to meet the needs of every child, and supervision is a top priority, both inside and outside. Teachers provide individualized support to help each child reach their learning goals.
  1. Learning Milestones. Teachers use tools like observations, checklists, and rating scales to see if children are meeting appropriate developmental milestones.
  1. Physical Environment. The facility is designed to meet children’s needs and provide comfort and safety via supervision, appropriately sized furnishings, ample toys and supplies, daily cleaning schedules for room and supplies, and an overall safe environment.
  1. Health & Nutrition. The facility makes it a top priority to keep all children healthy and safe by ensuring teachers are certified in pediatric first aid, informing parents of injuries, conducting daily health screenings, and sanitizing toys and equipment daily. The center provides healthy, balanced meals and snacks and has strict food allergy/restriction policies in place.
  1. Staff competencies, Preparation, and Support. Teachers are qualified early childhood educators who are constantly looking to grow and expand their knowledge through continuing education and exposure to a variety of learning opportunities.
  1. Families. All are welcomed and encouraged to be involved in every aspect of the program; families receive regular communication during check in/out, drop off/pick up, and via phone calls, messages through a parent communication app, and emails.
  1. Community Relationships. Partnering with local programs to build a sense of community, strong facilities will show children what their neighborhoods offer and create lasting relationships that encourage children’s interests.
